چکیده

The 60 [im selected IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample is used as a starting point to derive additional complete flux-limited samples of extragalactic objects at 12, 25, and 100 ¡im. With these complete samples the luminosity functions at all IRAS wavelengths are derived for the local Universe. These luminosity functions are used to determine the infrared emission of the local Universe. The maximum in the energy output of galaxies occurs at 100 /¿m. The infrared emission of galaxies at 12 and 25 //m represents — 30% of the total infrared luminosity in the local Universe. The mean infrared colors of infrared selected galaxies vary systematically with infrared luminosity; the ratio *S'V(60 /im)/<S'v( 100 //m) increases and Sv(\2 ¡im)/Sv{25 fim) decreases with increasing infrared luminosity.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

We study the morphology and star formation properties of 159 local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) using multi-color images from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The LIRGs are selected from a crosscorrelation analysis between the IRAS survey and SDSS. They are all brighter than 15.9 mag in the r-band and below redshift ∼ 0.1, and so can be reliably classified morphol...

The Contribution of HI - rich Galaxies to the Damped

We present a study of HI-rich galaxies in the local universe selected from blind emission-line surveys. These galaxies represent the emission-line counterparts of local damped Lyman-α systems. We find that the HI cross-section of galaxies is drawn from a large range of galaxy masses below MHI∗ , 66% of the area comes from galaxies in the range 8.5 < Log MHI∗ < 9.7. Both because of the low mass ...

A Bridge from Optical to Infrared Galaxies: Explaining Local Properties, Predicting Galaxy Counts and the Cosmic Background Radiation

We give an explanation for the origin of various properties observed in local infrared galaxies, and make predictions for galaxy counts and cosmic background radiation (CBR), by a new model extended from that for optical/near-infrared galaxies. Important new characteristics of this study are that (1) mass scale dependence of dust extinction is introduced based on the size-luminosity relation of...
